PHILIPPINES
HIGHLIGHTS
7000 islands make up the archipelago of the Philippines and are the most forgotten corners of Southeast Asia. Away from the main route of travel by land, and with the recent history of martial law and endemic corruption, the country must strive to have as many tourists as those who visit neighboring states. In 2000, a research center in Brussels said that the Philippines are the world, the country most prone to disasters, including typhoons, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods. Political instability continues to slow the development of the country.
Despite these difficulties, most of the archipelago enjoys a quiet location, stable and relatively safe. The Philippines like to call the place where 'Asia smiles' and the locals are generally very friendly and helpful. In addition, the means of transport are cheap, eat well, there are many possibilities for accommodation and English is spoken almost everywhere.
PHILIPPINES INFO TRAVEL
WEATHER
Usually the best time to visit the Philippines is the one between mid-December to mid-May, during the Christmas holidays and Easter, when there aren't hurricanes, however many people are on the road and it becomes difficult to fit on any type of transport.
January and May are the months with the most colorful festivals, while the terraced rice fields of Luzon give their best in March and April, and this is also the best time to visit the smaller islands.
EVENTS
The New Year is celebrated with great enthusiasm and plenty of fireworks. On January 9 at the Black Nazarene Procession, largest procession of the country, a life-size statue of Jesus in black wood is paraded through the streets of Quiapo. Filipino version of Mardi Gras is the Ati-Atihan, which lasts three days and is celebrated in Kalibo on the island of Panay in the third week of January. Manifestations of penance on Good Friday have become very famous, especially those of San Fernando and Antipolo, near Manila. Other processions take place on the Feast of Flores de Mayo in May, this time in honor of the Virgin Mary. The Independence Day is celebrated on June 12 with military parades. Virtually every week of the year somewhere in the Philippines is held a party.
THE TRIP
The only way to reach the Philippines is to travel by plane, the only points of entry are Manila and Cebu. Philippines are linked with many cities in Asia and Australia, New Zealand and the United States. There are also flights between Davao in Mindanao and Manado on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. It is also possible to travel between the Philippines and Malaysia and Indonesia. Schedules and fares are subject to frequent changes, so it is better to arrange for to a certain flexibility.
LOCAL TRANSPORT
Several airlines offer flights linking the cities of the Philippines. There is only one functioning rail line running from Manila to Naga in southern Luzon, so the main means for travel by land are the long-distance buses.
Many ferries providing services between the islands, but their conditions and their quality often leaves something to be desired. Another option is the rental car and in major cities there are offices of several international agencies.
As for local transport, available are the jeepney (jeep change), taxis fitted with a taximeter,
the PU-Cab (small taxis without a meter), tricycles (motorcycles with sidecars) and "riscị".
