Located in the heart of Europe, Hungary with experience in welcoming tourists is a great place to get to the east of the continent. Most travelers choose the picturesque Budapest, with its cafes, lively arts scene and the music, its many cultural and recreational events, even if it means venturing outside the capital across the plains, passess lakes with many resorts, visit Baroque towns and rustic country. Hungary's other attractions are its excellent wines, relaxing spas and birdwatching in some of the best places in Europe.
Citizens from EU countries can visit Hungary with a valid identity card or passport for foreign travel. Children under 15 must be accompanied by the 'white paper' or passport staff for further details please contact your place of residence or the police.
Hungary has joined the Schengen area in December 2007. The most obvious consequence of the Schengen provisions for people is no longer required to show identification when crossing the borders of the signatory states

WEATHER
Climate can be pretty wet in May and June, altought spring is beautiful in Hungary. Summer is hot and unusually long, but resorts are very crowded from late July to August. As Paris and Rome, Budapest stops in August (called 'the season when grow cucumbers, because this is practically and is the only thing that happens here).
Autumn is wonderful, especially in the hills surrounding the capital and northern highlands. November is one of the wettest months of the year. The winter is cold, often bleak and museums and other tourist attractions are often closed. Anyone who loves animals is well to avoid this season: half of women wearing fur!
EVENTS
The main event is the Spring Festival in Budapest (March), an event that lasts 15 days, with local shows and international conferences and exhibitions. Other important events are the Festival of Budapest (February), which presents the new Hungarian films, the Busójárás (Mohács; February), the wildest Mardi Gras in the country; Weeks in Sopron (Sopron, June-July) a festival focusing on early music and dance performances, the festival of popular arts (Nagykálló; August), one of the main celebrations of the year and days of jazz (Debrecen, September), the most important jazz festival in Hungary
THE TRIP
Malév Hungarian Airlines (www.malev.hu), have direct connections via Prague, Madrid and Amsterdam to Budapest. Airport Ferihegy International (www.bud.hu) connect North America, the Middle East and nearly 60 cities in mainland Europe and the British Isles. It also has links to Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou in China.
Hungary is connected by road and rail to all the seven neighboring countries. Almost all the bus connections are operated by Eurolines (www.eurolines.com)
The Hungarian State Railways, Magyar Államvasutak (www.mav.hu) link the country to the rest of Europe in every direction. Trains to London (via Paris and Monaco), Stockholm (via Hamburg and Copenhagen), Moscow, Rome and Istanbul (via Belgrade). Budapest have almost all international trains arrive and depart from the Keleti (Eastern Railway Station)
A hydrofoil service on the Danube link Budapest to Vienna from April to October, passengers can get off to Bratislava notifying staff in advance. LOCAL TRANSPORT
There are no scheduled domestic flights in Hungary. The cost of air flight is prohibitive, but if you take one anyway you can contact the companies Farnia Hungary (www.farnair.com) and etstream ( www.jetstream.hu in Hungarian).
The railway company MÁV (www.mav.hu) operates with a reliable and secure service. All lines converge on Budapest, but many secondary lines connecting the smaller towns between them.
Internal system bus Volánbusz (www.volanbusz.hu) is a good alternative - and sometimes necessary - to train. Southern Transdanubia region and in many parts of the Great Plains coaches are essential, unless you are prepared to change constantly train. For short trips to the Danube Bend or Lake Balaton buses are better than trains. The national bus from Budapest to depart from the station 'távolságiautóbusz pályaudvar' (staszione bus over long distances) and not by local stations which are called 'helyiautóbusz pályaudvar'.
Travellers arriving by car can count on good roads, readily available fuel and service stations that remain open even at night. Renting a vehicle generally must at least to be 21 years old and have the license from one year. All the major international agencies have offices in Budapest.
Local transport in cities are efficient, carried by buses and trolleybuses as well as trams in Budapest, Debrecen, Szeged and Miskolc. Budapest also has a metro and suburban commuter rail network. Taxis are many and convenient, if applied the right price (which is not always the case in Budapest).
