HIGHLIGHTS
Greece gave to world: art, philosophy and democracy, when the majority of other people were still in swaddling clothes, his legacy to humanity therefore did not have rivals. From smog in Athens to the dazzling white of the islands, many are the oldest fragments on which you can bet: the navel of the world in Delphi, the sacred ruins of the island of Dilos, frescoed Minoan palaces on Crete and almost certainly the ruins of Atlantis at Santorini.
If Greeks are tenacious guardians of tradition, this does not mean they do not know fun, their indeed desire of celebrating dates back to Dionysus. In addition, hot sun and clear water make Greece an irresistible country where you can find relax. Whether you're dining in a tavern sipping a coffee or in a beach, or a disco until late, chances are there that greeks gods have already seduced.
GREECE INFO TRAVEL
WEATHER
Spring and autumn are best times to visit Greece. Winter is very quiet, except for major cities, since almost all the major resorts are closed from end of November to the beginning of April. However ongoing initiatives to extend the operation of services throughout the year and then the situation will change in future. The climatic conditions are perfect between Easter and mid-June, when the weather is pleasantly warm in most places but temperatures are never too high, the beaches and archaeological sites are relatively thin, public transport working almost at full capacity and Hotel accommodations are cheaper and easier to find than the high season (from mid June to late August).
EVENTS
The greek calendar is a a whole succession of festivals and various events, some of them religious, others on cultural background, and others simply an excuse to have fun. The 'gynaikratia', which falls on January 8 is the day when they change roles in the villages of northern Greece. Women spend the day in 'kafeneia' (coffee) and other venues where men often meet while they are at home to attend to domestic chores. Greek carnival takes place in February-March in the three weeks preceding the start of Lent and is reflected in costumes, parties, traditional dancing and general revelry. Easter is the most important holiday of the year in Greece and is celebrated with candlelit processions, banquets and fireworks shows: emphasis is given to the Crucifixion to the Resurrection, so this is essentially a joyous occasion. Throughout the country there are also several summer events: the most famous of all is the Athens Festival (June to September), which hosts musical and theatrical performances in ancient theaters.
THE TRIP
From northern Europe, flying is the fastest, convenient and economical way to reach Greece. Furthermore, scheduled flights are priced so that content does not make much sense to go looking for charter flights. Travel by bus or train are often more expensive than aircraft. Greece has 16 international airports that connect the major cities of Europe, the main ones are the Athens (Eleftherios Venizelos; www.aia.gr), Rhodes (Diagoras), Thessaloniki and Heraklion (Nikos Kazantzakis), Crete. The Greeks national airline of is Olympic Airlines (www.olympicairlines.com), but it is not the only one international flights: Aegean Airlines (www.aegeanair.com) has direct flights from Athens to Rome and Venice via Thessaloniki to Cologne, Düsseldorf, Monaco, Frankfurt and Stuttgart.
If you start from other European countries is generally cheaper to travel by bus or train. Also trains are more comfortable but more expensive and less flexible than buses. The Eurail passes (www.eurail.com) are convenient if you plan to visit many places in a limited time. Europeans, then, can use InterRail Global Pass (www.interrailnet.com), which allows travel in 30 countries except of residence, or Interrail cards to travel in only one country (again excluding residence) , but both options are worth only if you plan to travel many miles by train.
Buses are slower but cheaper (though sometimes their prices can not compete with the offers made by low-cost airlines). If you decide to travel by bus look at Eurolines (www.eurolines.com)
LOCAL TRANSPORT
Public transport network makes it rather easy to move in Greece. Buses are the masters and you can reach even the most remote locations. All long-distance buses on the peninsula and islands are operated by regional cooperatives called KTEL (Koino Tamio Eispraxeon Leoforion, www.ktel.org). The fees are set by the government. KTEL buses are safe, modern, and most also have air conditioning, at least those that cover the most important treatment. In remote areas of the country the means tend to be older and less comfortable.
Trains are a great alternative when available. The railway network is managed by the Greek Railway (Organismos Sidirodromon Ellados; www.ose.gr), known as OSA.
For many travelers, it must be said that travel in Greece means many transport changement to move form an island to another through many ferry service in the Adriatic and Aegean. Services are more frequent from May to October, when there are more tourists. Agencies involved in maritime transport are Dodekanisos Seaways (www.12ne.gr), which manages two catamarans that link Rhodes and Paros, IN Lines (www.ferries.gr / in ), which has high-speed ferries linking Piraeus Syros, Tinos, Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, Lavrion, Kythnos and Amorgos
