HIGHLIGHTS
WEATHER
Any time is good to visit Australia. In summer (December to February) is very hot almost everywhere except in Tasmania. In the southern states this is a time for great beach life, but be careful the risks of sunburn. In the north this is the rainy season the climate is very humid and the sea teems with giant box jellyfish. From June to August the weather becomes cooler. It is a good time to visit Queensland. If you love skiing this is the right time to reach the snowfields of the North South Wales and Victoria. Overall the best choices are spring and autumn because the weather is mild almost everywhere. Landscapes are filled with spring flowers and autumn is very beautiful especially in Canberra and the Victorian Alps. If you want to avoid traffic and crowds do not arrive in Australia during Easter.
EVENTS
Christmas coincides with the long summer school holidays and throughout December and January no one will blame you if you will be convinced that half of Australia is on holiday. The festivals and artistic events attract fans from all over the country. The Sydney Festival, held in January, includes open-air concerts, street theater and fireworks. The Adelaide Arts Festival takes place in early March on pair years. Each year, Womadelaide, an outdoor festival of music and dance, takes place in second week of March. Melbourne Comedy Festival is held in April, a festival dedicated to literature in September and the fabulous Melbourne International Festival in October. Events celebrating Aboriginal culture are the Stompen Ground Festival in Broome in October and Wugularr Barunga Sports and Cultural Festival, near Katherine in June
THE TRIP
Almost all tourists arrive in Australia by air. The main international airports are at Sydney (Kingsford Smith www.sydneyairport.com.au), Melbourne (tullamarine www.melbourne-airport.com.au ) and Brisbane (BNE www.brisbaneairport.com.au), followed by Perth (PER www.perthairport.net.au) Adelaide (ADL www.aal.com.au), Darwin (DRW www.ntapl.com.au) and Cairns (CNS www.cairnsport.com.au/airport) . Links with Asia, Europe and the United States are managed by several companies, so prices are different, but the remoteness from the rest of the world means that flights remain still quite expensive, as well as long. The current international recognition for Australia makes it difficult in many cases find a flight that is not already booked: should plan your trip well in advance.
From countries such as Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and some Pacific islands is possible (but certainly not easy or safe) to reach Australia by boat.
TRANSPORT
Australia is so vast (and as empty in some areas) as about 80% of long-distance travel by public transportation are carried by air. Qantas (www.qantas.com.au) is the main national airline in domestic flights, along with its low cost subsidiary, Jetstar (www.jetstar.com.au). Another very competitive airline that flies around the country is Virgin Blue (www.virginblue.com.au). Few people pay the full fare for domestic flights since the airlines offer a wide range of facilities, including occasional discounts and pass air. In Australia there are also many small operators that operate regional routes, in different areas such as remote islands where are the only transport system. Many of these companies are subsidiaries or Qantas partners.
if thinking Australia, almost everybody has to mind the Sydney Opera House or Uluru, the sacred mountain aborigines who until not long ago was known as Ayers Rock. However these famous icons do not do justice to the wealth of natural treasures and cultural diversity in Australia, a country that offers an infinite range of travel experiences ranging from wild landscapes and desolate outback to the spectacle of the Great Barrier, from the cosmopolitan Sydney to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Australia is a huge country and if you plan to attend an opera in Sydney one night and meet Crocodile Dundee the next night you should review your plans and your knowledge of geography. The enormous size and the friction between the ancient Aboriginal traditions and culture of the New World shaped the nature of this country.
Australian society is multicultural. Until the Second World War, Australians were predominantly British and Irish descent, but then the situation has radically changed. After War, followed migrations from Greece, Italy, Yugoslavia, Lebanon and Turkey, which have added more recent immigration from Asia. Then there are about 230,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander. Many Australians are native speakers of Italian, Greek, Lebanese, Vietnamese or Turkish. The English Australian often use a mix of slang and abbreviated words native who can make their speech completely unintelligible
Sport for Australians is a religion and are champions in cricket, rugby, swimming and cycling. Among the most popular sports are basketball, motor boating, and Aussie Rules football, a sport only in Australia, similar to Gaelic football. The 2000 Olympics were held in Sydney.
AUSTRALIA INFO TRAVEL
There are several long-distance bus companies but only one service can be considered truly national: the Greyhound Australia (www.greyhound.com.au). Buses are comfortable and equipped with air condition, bathrooms and television, but if you travel between major cities, prepare a long journey. You can also choose to visit parts of Australia on board of affordable buses as part of organized tours, which sometimes last several days. Among companies that offer this type of service we report Adventure Tours Australia (www.adventuretours.com.au), Autopia Tours (www.autopiatours.com.au) EASYRIDER Backpacker Tours (www.easyridertours.com.au), Groovy Grape Getaways Australia (www.groovygrape.com.au) Nullarbor Traveller (www.the-traveller.com.au) Oz Experience (www.ozexperience.com), Wayward Bus Touring Company (www.waywardbus.com.au) and Wild-Life Tours (www.wildlifetours.com.au).
Few tourists make long journeys by train, because usually this is the slower land transport system and remains proportionately expensive. The three major interstate services: the Indian Pacific between Sydney and Perth, the Overland between Melbourne and Adelaide and the Ghan between Adelaide and Darwin - are managed by Great Southern Railways (www.gsr.com.au) .
Many tourists come by groups and rent or buy a car (to get your vehicle in Australia is very expensive). This can be an economical way to travel to Australia, if you do not incur to many mechanical failures. In this country are available all major international car rental agencies, if you look for low rates contact the local companies, but remember to check that the contract provides unlimited mileage, so you can move without limits. Highway 1 circumnavigates the continent, staying close to the coast for much of the route. Beware of the monster trucks on country roads, of course it is wise to give priority to any vehicle larger than yours.
The water is certainly not lacking in Australia, but unless you're lucky enough to be able to get free on a yacht, it's not a feasible way to travel in the country. The only regular service carrying passengers operated by TT-Line (www.spiritoftasmania.com.au), who with hits two ferry go back and forth between Devonport and Melbourne.
Australia has much to offer to cyclists, for information, contact the national association for cycling, Bicycle Federation of Australia ( www.bfa.asn.au).
